I instantly recognized myself in K.L. Kranes’s post on the writing life and knew I had to share it.
On Saturday I participated in my first author panel with a fellow local writer in the Northern Virginia area, Angela Glascock (Locksmith at the End of the World) and moderated by another local writer, Lisa Tully.
Author panels are meant to give the audience insight on novels, authors and the writing process. But, I learned a few things too, including it seems as though we writers have a lot in common.
Here are some of the commonalities I noticed.
We wrote as children, all the time

I obsessively clutch onto a word or try to squeeze dry my mind for a particular word, even when it’s not to be used in my writing…so glad I’m not the only one haha!

I share all those writerly traits except the last one–my goal IS to entertain, others and myself. If I tell a good story, one that pulls the reader into my created world and out of their own for a little while, I’ve done what I set out to do.

There’s no stock model of a writer, just as there’s no set formula for the process of writing. If you’re writing, you’re a writer. Be proud.

Thanks, Mike. I have a sister that’s an accomplished poet and therefore, referred to as “the writer in the family”. I never thought there could be two or felt ‘worthy’ but I meet all the behavioral patterns. Thanks. I do post to WordPress and am proud of my posts.
