Quote of the day

del Toro

“And I want to tell you, everyone that is dreaming of using the genre of fantasy to tell the stories about the things that are real in the world today – you can do it! This is a door. Kick it open and come in!” – Guillermo Del Toro, accepting an Oscar for The Shape of Water.

    1. del Toro is right, though it seems counterintuitive that the best way to confront reality is through flights of imagination. It’s true, no matter the art form.

  1. Rod Serling was an advocate of that same kind of thinking as well. Our stories should illuminate and spark deeper dialogue about our world, our differences, and our concerns. Wonderful, Mr Del Toro, wonderful!

  2. Mike: You are starting to open my mind. This post, plus that of February 20 with the link to cuspdispatches.wordpress.com, suggest I reconsider the value to be found in fantasy and science fiction.

“Hamilton” made me appreciate rap. One painting at The Met Museum gave me an appreciation for portraits. I can be open. “Keep pounding” as they say in a certain NC sports locale.
