“Write a lot. And finish what you write. Don’t join writer’s clubs and go sit around having coffee reading pieces of your manuscript to people. Write it. Finish it. I set those rules up years ago, and nothing’s changed.”
I met Alex Haley and got his autograph at a writers’ club meeting. I also was able to produce about a dozen of my short plays through the efforts of another club.
Yep, sharing ripe ideas with other writers can be destructive.

Americaoncoffee,
Some people like to pretend to be writers instead of being writers.

I don’t share WIP until I’ve written the last page. Then I can run it past our workshop and not worry about depleting my creative energy.

Definitely, but wannabes can be groomed just from hanging out with those that are writers.

Totally agree with Pournelle’s thoughts. Is he the Science-Fiction Pournelle?

There’s those who sit around and talk about it. Then there’s those who do it. I rather be in the latter half.
